Reading Action Program
On average 20% of US adults are illiterate - this is a 2023 statistic. According to worldpopulationreview.com, developed nations' adult literacy rate is 96%.
The Reading Action Program encourages District 22W clubs to donate books or participate in a reading program.
Thurmont Lions Club Literacy Committee was very busy in 2021,celebrating the Readathon Partnership with Thurmont's Elementary and Primary schools which are considered ONE school in two buildings.
The committee decided to go all out and do something unique. We wanted to involve the schools children, a book vendor, local artists and community business.
By following these steps, we rated the Partnership a tremendous success and students were well rewarded for their efforts.
- We contacted the school principal and explained how the Lions Club wanted to connect with the school to promote reading. She was very supportive and suggested we work with the Reading (Literacy) specialist. (Every school in Frederick Co. MD has one.)
- We met and decided to work closely to promote Literacy. The school would handle the paperwork and the Lions Committee would provide the prizes.
- Students would record minutes read___rather # of books. Parents would record the minutes read on a chart supplied by the book vendor. Students could read to an adult, friend, pet, sibling, or stuffed animal. The time frame was a specific 2 week period.
- All Participating students received a book, bookmark, and certificate.
- Top 3 readers at each grade level received a Lion painted on a cloth bag which contained several books, plus a painted rock to go with a particular book character, and a gift certificate to a local pizza restaurant.
- Books were either donated by funds from Lions Club or by Committee members. A list of appropriate books for each grade level was found on the internet and approved by the school.
- We were lucky to find many on sale at Amazon.
By following these steps, we rated the Partnership a tremendous success and students were well rewarded for their efforts.
The school had a celebration and shared the prizes. The committee could not attend because of COV-19 and no one was allowed in the school. We did see the pictures and posted them in our newsletter and on our Facebook page.
