VDG Challenges -
Beginning in 2019, the First Vice District Governor, Evan Gillett introduced the Vice District's Governor's challenges to District 22W. A little friendly competition which has benefited an extraordinary number of people
Challenges to provide bedding for Sleep in Heavenly Peace ( https://shpbeds.org/); to homeless shelters, the environment and more. As varied as VDG is, the goal has been the same. "WE Serve"
Camperhips- Camp Merrick in Nanjemoy MD runs a camp for diabetic children each summer. It provides a fun environment for children promoting education, creative expression and Social growth for children to grow. We provide scholarships for the children to attend.
Hearing Preservation, Awarness and Action Committee
Our committee collects used hearing aids from the clubs in our district and sends them to the Hearing Charities of America in Kansas City, Missouri. Clubs also collect unused hearing aid batteries which we give to needy people in our district.
We offer a $2000 college scholarship at McDaniel College for either a student majoring in the American Sign Language Program, taking a course in the American Sign Language program or is either deaf or hard of hearing and is attending college, regardless of their major each semester.
We provide camperships to deaf children who live within our district and are in grades 3-12 to attent the Deaf/ASI Camp which is run by Deaf Camps Inc. at the Manidokan Camp in Washington County.
We make a monetary donation to Lions Camp Merrick for the deaf program which is held at Lions Camp Merrick in Najemoy, Maryland under the direction of Bringing Hands Camps inc. from the Washington DC Metro Area.
We refer needy people to the Miracle Ear Foundation to receive hearing aids. The individual must meet the Miracle Ear Foundation criteria to receive the free hearing aids and our committee pays the processing fee. Our committee also provide free hearing aid batteries to those individuals.
Over the years, we have been a speaker at Lions Club meetings, sharing information about hearing preservation and services.
Our committee plans to participate with the hearing chairs in the Multiple District to have a table at the 2023 MD22 Convention with information about hearing services which are provided by our Lions and how to protect your hearing. We sill give out free ear plugs each day and hold a free raffle daily for a pair of ear protectors.
